This Blog will talk about how to simplify values for an artist. Most people don’t take advantage of values . There paintings don’t read across the room.

The Five-Value Scale

Strong paintings have simple values. The ability to make values the same, despite color changes, is important for simple shapes in a painting. The Five-Value scale strengthens this skill.

Although there are many more values seen by the eye, reducing them to five simple values–ranging from white to black–makes understanding value simpler. This scale is essentially a simplified gradation of value that is easy to see. I will also show how the Five-Value scale translates into color.
