Sherrie McGraw's Prestigious Career
Sherrie McGraw has been at the forefront of the American Art scene for over thirty years. As a young woman in Oklahoma City in 1978, she was urged by her teachers Richard and Edith Goetz to move to New York to study at the famed Art Students League where they had studied within the lineage of Robert Brackman and George Bridgeman. In her initial years at the League she studied primarily with legendary artist, David Leffel, but also learned anatomy through Robert Beverly Hale and Jon Zahourek at the New York Academy.
After just a few years in New York, she was already proceeding to make her own way as an exceptional artist and began exhibiting and winning awards in shows at the Salmagundi Club, the National Arts Club, the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit, the Pastel Society, the Hudson Valley Art Association, and more. By the time she was thirty, she was teaching classes at the Art Students League of New York, having been asked to take over those of Thomas Fogarty and Gustav Rehberger, as well as conduct her own. McGraw has become one of America’s foremost artists and teachers.
Her work has received numerous awards and has shown in major art institutions and museums, including the Butler Institute of American Art, where she had a solo show in 2014. McGraw lectures and demonstrates for art institutions such as the Portrait Society of America, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Brigham Young University, the Art Students League of New York, the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and Studio Incamminati in Philadelphia.
I can’t keep it to myself—your book is incredible! In reading it, I am learning so much about the languages of drawing vs painting. I waited a bit to read it to build up excitement and then started reading it this weekend. I love everything about it! With every page you make me realize how blind I was/am, and I can’t wait to read the next page!
~ Anastasiia Marushko – Artist Guild Member and Artist
I recently bought your book, this summer, since June. I’ve turned the pages so many times since it’s arrival that the cover has separated from the pages! This is both a compliment and a cautionary tale! I hope to take a class from you in the future. Thanks so much for writing this book.

Testimonials
The “Language of Drawing”, by Sherrie McGraw is a classic book for your reference library…Not a traditional ‘how to draw’ book, but one that will teach you how to think, approach and ultimately express line in a way you only dreamed of…But more than that you want to actually do it. And it is possible. Throw those old notions out the window that only cast drawings and laborious exercises can get you there. It’s gesture that we respond to and it’s knowing simple landmarks to capture that gesture that can get you there in a few simple strokes.
Sherrie McGraw is brilliant! This book is equally as important for painters as it is for those that want to learn to draw. She explains things in a manner that is clear, simple and understandable. It made me conscious of the true difference between drawing and painting and how one perceives them. It’s given me a completely new and better understanding of drawing.
The tutorials I am watching for this course, on your member’s Guild is so informative, Sherrie. Your unique way of teaching how to observe and draw so elegantly and delicately has changed the way I looked and drew gesture before. Every time I look at one of the videos by you, David or Jackie, a whole new world of seeing and possibilities open up…I shall never say enough thank you…love from New Zealand!
This book is not a traditional ‘how to draw’ book but one that will teach you how to express line in a way you only dreamed of. You’ll also learn to capture gesture in a few simple strokes. Sherrie’s always been my secret weapon. Now she can be yours.
