This Power Point lecture is not a dry art history lesson; it is a window into a revolutionary way of understanding the problem of painting. Through an examination of paint application, David shares his insights about how painting developed and why. His observations have the potential to revolutionize your comprehension of painting and thereby transform your work.
This lecture was prepared for several art classes from the Scottsdale Artists School in Scottsdale, Arizona and is based on David’s sixty years of experience studying painting problems. His discoveries reveal solutions that have morphed from drawing solutions to what he calls sculptural solutions. He gives examples to illustrate how painters initially translated the world with rounded forms. They modeled form with paint to create form. Their knowledge of painting arose from drawing and had a natural progression to drawing with color. Leonardo da Vinci championed this philosophy and felt that the height of painting was to leave no visible evidence of its making.
According to David, Titian’s later experimentations opened a Pandora’s box of emotional possibilities of paint application, and that started a revolution in painting that reached its pinnacle with Rembrandt. He above all other artists understood paint in a way that is rare in history and he delved most deeply into its secrets.
You will enjoy hearing David’s keen insights about the evolution of painting from its beginnings in drawing to its sculptural evolution. For the viewer, this lecture makes sense of the oft-times misunderstood development of painting.
