David always espoused that students shouldn’t take everything a teacher says at face value but rather they should ask questions if they don’t understand something. Unfortunately All too often teachers are simply repeating what they have been told rather than truly understanding the material well enough to impart it to a student.

Sherrie and David converse about how they learned to paint and draw and then offer advice on how to determine if something is true or not.

David states that something true in painting would have its counterpart in reality, meaning it would be true in life as well. They both believe that understanding leads to the development of techniques—not the other way around. They stress that it is most important to have a sense of what you want to achieve visually and that will drive learning.

Sherrie and David discuss style and the difficulty of finding yourself when you are trying to hold onto what you feel makes you unique. They say that we are who we are and there is no getting away from that fact. Thus, there is no need to try to express ourselves or shy away from being influenced. The way around this dilemma is to achieve understanding that will pave a path to learning.
