The Curriculum:

WEEK ONE: Painting Flowers Before They Change

You will learn how to bring home a bouquet of flowers and then find the perfect set up even as you deal with the fact that flowers change…rapidly. You’ll see how to work with the accidental beauty you see and treat the first day much like a time to study your flowers. You’ll design the painting as you go, easing the intensity of the moment while allowing you to truly study the flowers and capture the freshness of the moment. We’ll also talk about why and how magic can happen in a painting.

WEEK TWO: Finding a Good Idea for a Set Up

You’ll learn basic principles in setting up a still life and how to simplify your idea so that you have a good design for your arrangement instead of a lot of objects thrown together. You’ll see this principle demonstrated and why this understanding informs every choice you make in the painting. This class will focus on the elements that make a set up superior, and you’ll learn what it means to paint the abstract idea from the start. This understanding will significantly change the enjoyment you have painting.

WEEK THREE: Finishing Your Painting

This class covers the most asked-for information—how to finish a painting without overworking it. You’ll learn why overworking happens and how to avoid it. Even though a true finish is next to impossible to capture on film, the painting will be developed as far as possible in the week interim. Then, if there is more to do, you’ll find out what this is and why and be given access to an image of the ultimate finish, which could possibly happen before the last critique of the workshop on August 31st.
