REGINA LYUBOVNAYA/ January/February
Regina Lyubovnaya will be joining us as a guest teacher Wednesdays in January and February starting on the 10th. She says that, “Painting LIGHT is still one of my most important reasons why I paint; objects are just an excuse to arrange the melody of light.”
Regina immigrated from Russia to the U.S. when she was 15 and began taking private painting lessons. In Los Angeles she attended a high school with little knowledge of English, so art class was her favorite. She knew that she wanted to be a traditional painter, but training was hard to find. She has studied at Loyola Marymount University, Art Center College of Design, Florence Academy, Italy and the Art Students League in New York. “…and still I felt in a fog of confusion till I got lucky and met David Leffel, a master painter who became my guide for the next seven years. David often said ‘Painting is logical and therefore it’s learnable.’ I really wanted to learn it and with great stubbornness I painted a few hundred bad paintings before something started to shift.”
If you want more inspiration to make a shift, please join us for this still-life series with Regina. In the Weekly Atelier on January 10th she will begin by presenting a slideshow on the tradition of Russian painters. Then she will demonstrate the still life. Reference photos and materials list will be supplied if you want to paint along.
Regina believes every artist has their own journey, “mine was long and every day I feel lucky to be painting, to be learning, to be discovering.”
