Values in Painting and Drawing
Why are values important in a painting?
Why does my painting look grey?
This blog will talk about how an artist can simplify values. Most people don’t take advantage of the power of strong, simple values. Consequently, their paintings are weak and don’t read from across the room.
The Five-Value Scale
Strong paintings have simple values. The ability to make values the same, despite color changes, is important for creating simple shapes in a painting. The Five-Value scale strengthens this skill.
Although there are many more values seen by the eye, reducing them to five simple values–ranging from white to black–makes understanding value simpler. This scale is essentially a simplified gradation of value that is easy to see. I will also show how the Five-Value scale translates into color.
